Undertale NSP on Nintendo Switch is now available. The game is visually and in terms of content, with only a few minor tweaks, compared to the 2017 PlayStation 4 version (and the original 2015 Windows/OSX version). The most notable addition is a new miniboss not found in the previous versions. Below is our original review from August 15, 2017.
I finished my first playthrough of Undertale in stunned silence. My adventure had begun with bad jokes and silly puzzles, but the ending shocked me in a completely unexpected way. That, in a way, is Undertale’s specialty: playing with our expectations of what an RPG should be, subverting them, and using them to drive a story unlike any other in the world of video games. Its solid narrative, the seamless integration of gameplay with story, and its deep understanding of its audience combine to create something that surprises at every turn.
Undertale has to be a game, and that’s the key to its brilliance.
There are tons of jokes that appeal to internet nerds, and I often felt like Undertale was talking directly to me, like it knew what I was thinking. An anime-loving character’s “selfie,” for example, is actually a picture of a garbage can with pink sparkle filters over it (and speaking from experience, this is very accurate). I especially love Undertale’s humor when it has something to say, however subtle. I entered a snail race (called Thundersnail) and was told to press Z repeatedly to encourage my snail to win. I spammed Z until she burst into flames, and the Thundersnail organizer told me that “all that pressure to succeed really got to her.” It was, like many of Undertale’s one-off jokes, extremely relatable — and knowing and predicting its audience is one of Undertale’s biggest strengths
